350Marin and its allies are proud to have #ShutDownChase with 350 Seattle and all the other 350 groups around the country on May 7th who were calling out Chase Bank’s huge increase in investments that promote violence to the planet and indigenous people’s rights. While ours was a smaller action at their San Rafael branch at 4th and C St., we nonetheless feel the same.

Last year JPMorgan Chase increased its financing of the Canadian tar sands by 400% and is currently attempting to block the introduction of a shareholder resolution that would force the bank to undertake a study into its tar sands investments.

This is one reason why we #ShutDownChase.

Tar sands devastates our climate, our forests, and our water. What is less well-known is the devastating impact it has on indigenous communities — and especially on indigenous women.

Over the last four decades, over 4,000 indigenous women have gone missing or been murdered in Canada. The murder rate of indigenous women is over 4x that of the general population. This violence vastly increases near the “man camps” that service tar sands extraction sights.

350 Seattle reported that at their #ShutDownChase protest action, multiple protesters were arrested for participating in the demonstration.  The group tweeted: “Destroying the world in search of profit…perfectly legal.
