SUMMARY:Don't Let BAAQMD Permit a Huge GHG Increase!
DESCRIPTION:The Chevron oil refinery in Richmond\, Calif.\n \nAs we recently reported\, on May 31st\, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) Board has set in motion its final approval of an absolute cap on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the five huge oil refineries in the Bay Area: Chevron\, Shell\, Tesoro\, Valero\, and Phillips 66.  It will happen on June 21st starting at 9:45AM in San Francisco.  While we hope and expect that the Board will finally enact the GHG portion of the emission monitoring and emission limits enforcement that 350 Marin\, 350 Bay Area and all its regional and community allies have been pressing for for years\, industry pressure to reject or delay these rules has been fierce and unrelenting.  And it appears they have managed to convince Jack Broadbent\, CEO of BAAQMD\, to go back on the agreement and he will now be proposing that the cap be so far beyond what they are currently emitting\, that the refineries would not have to worry about it for a long time. It is like allowing them to create a whole new refinery’s worth of emissions. The Board needs to know they have powerful public support for the action they took on May 31st and not let staff convince them that we need this “fake” cap that they are bringing up at the last minute.\n \nSo please join us at the upcoming hearing on June 21st.  If passed as it was initially proposed and as the Board directed (not with this latest change staff is now proposing)\, for the first time in the US\, and possibly anywhere\, a people-driven government will put a firm\, worthwhile emissions cap on a fossil fuel infrastructure operation to limit the damage it inflicts on the public and the planet.  Why has it taken so long? \nWe expect to have one or more groups carpooling from Marin\, so let us know if you may be interested in participating in a carpool.  If you’d like to have a better chance of being seated in the hearing room itself rather than the two overflow rooms with large monitors\, you should arrive before 8:30 am to get a seat in the big room. \nIf you’re interested getting more information or in going\, contact Richard Gray at richardgraysart@gmail.com and/or RSVP below. \nJune 21st\, 9:30AM \n375 Beale Street\nSan Francisco
