SUMMARY:Seeking Climate Justice Through the Law and the Arts
DESCRIPTION:Event participants Supervisor Kate Sears\, Attorney Marie Logan\, and Dancer Christina Barkley shown over youth at People’s Climate March NYC \nOn Friday\, March 9th at 6:30PM\, join us at the San Rafael Community Center for a fascinating dual program that includes both a heartening overview of the powerful legal actions being launched by Marin County and others across the country to hold oil companies financially responsible for the great damage caused by climate change\, and also a beautiful art performance in words\, music and dance\, that tells the story of how climate change turned one young girl’s world upside down.   In the first section\, Marin Country Supervisor Kate Sears\, an attorney herself who helped organize Marin’s lawsuit against Big Oil launched last summer\,  will give us a detailed glimpse of how the lawsuit came about\, where it stands\, and what it hopes to achieve.  Marie Logan\, an attorney working with the non-profit Earthjustice in San Francisco\, will tell us about how Earthjustice is using the courts to defend the planet and address climate change and climate justice issues.     The second\, performance section\, begins its tale in Latin America\, where climate change disrupts the ability of a village to survive off the land\, as it has done for centuries.  As the life of a young village girl there\, Espe\, crumbles\, she must leave her home and family\, and her journey becomes a epic voyage of inner and outer discovery to worlds beyond her imagining.      The performance includes dancer Christina Barkley of College of Marin\, Zeinab Benchakroun\, Andrea Taylor and Patrick Costello.  Download the event flyer you can post or share HERE. \nThe event location is the San Rafael Community Center\, 618 B St.\, San Rafael\, 94901.  Refreshments and Networking at 6:30PM\, Program 7 – 9PM.   The event is free for students\, with a suggested donation of $10 – $25.  No one will be turned away for lack of funds. \nPlease join us for this very educational and entertaining dual event!    RSVP below to let us know you’re coming! \n \n  \n  \n
