Bay Area’s Youth vs. Apocalypse lead the Global Climate Strike march in San Francisco on September 20th, 2019

Out of the Schools, the Offices, and Into the Streets!

From the Guardian, Sept. 27th:

“Six million people have taken to the streets over the past week, uniting across timezones, cultures and generations to demand urgent action on the escalating ecological emergency.

A fresh wave of climate strikes swept around the globe on Friday [9-27]with an estimated 2 million people walking out of schools and workplaces.

Organisers say that during the week of protests – that began with a global climate strike last week – a total of 6 million people, from trade unionists to schoolchildren, have taken part in thousands of towns and cities.

“This week was a demonstration of the power of our movement,” said a spokesperson for the FridaysForFuture group which has helped coordinate the demonstrations. “People power is more powerful than the people in power. It was the biggest ever climate mobilisation, and it’s only the beginning. The momentum is on our side and we are not going anywhere.”    — Read the full Guardian article HERE.

San Francisco

From the San Francisco Examiner:

“The protesters gathered Friday morning near House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office at the Federal Building at Seventh and Market streets and took off marching down Market Street at about 10:30 a.m. chanting, “Climate change has got to go” and “Climate justice now.” They marched to U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s office at 1 Post St. and then marched on to the waterfront.

Organizers for the San Francisco action said that they are calling on Pelosi and Feinstein to back the Green New Deal, an ambitious climate action plan introduced by U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, D-New York. They are also calling on corporations like Bank of America, Amazon and PG&E to divest from the fossil fuel industry and improve their own reliance on renewable energy sources.”  — See the full article HERE.

From a 350Marin member in the march on September 20th, Global Climate Strike day 1:

“We walked for 3 hours in the energized, mile-long SF crowd that seemed 90% teens and young people under 30 or so as they filled block after block of Market St., wound thru the SoMo new tech business district. We saw marchers with signs that said things like ‘Twitter.com workers striking for climate’ and a sign in the second floor window of Chase headquarters saying “We support you!”. At times, twenty or a hundred would chant together and beckon with their hands calling up to the faces watching from the concrete canyon windows above, “Out of the offices! Into the streets!”. Then on thru the old school financial district, chanting with painted faces, ‘It’s bullshit! Get off it! The planet’s not for profit!”. They played some hot march rhythms in well-spaced drum section after drum section and generally had a blast. 💕 These people will be back. They weren’t the usual sea of grey-haired baby-boomers.  Young people are finally taking over, and you can feel the new energy, excitement and inspiration!”

Novato

At one of the Climate Strike events in Marin, over a hundred energized climate-strikers of all ages took it to the streets of Novato for the Global Climate Strike on Friday, (see pictures below). Along their route, they stopped at branches of the largest funders of new fossil-fuel infrastructure in the world, big banks Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo, letting them know we’re not going to tolerate the deep, continuing damage they are doing to our planet!
